Sony and Discord announced a strategic partnership that has industry analysts and gamers alike excited for what this could mean.
Discord has quickly become one of the staples of the industry, offering virtual meeting space for people to discuss specific topics.
A large portion of those meeting rooms revolve around video games.
In a brief blog item about the partnership, Sony Interactive Entertainment President and CEO Jim Ryan said the investment could bear fruit as soon as early next year.
“At PlayStation, we’re constantly looking for new ways to enable players around the world to connect with one another, form new friendships and communities, and share fun experiences and lasting memories,” Ryan said in the release. It’s in this spirit that we’re excited to announce a new partnership with Discord, the communication service popularized by gamers and used by more than 140 million people every month around the world.”
The post did not say how much Sony invested in the company but acknowledged that it had participated in Discord’s most-recent round.
