EA acquires Super Mega Baseball developer

Electronic Arts enters the baseball fray with the acquisition of Metalhead. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Less than a week before Electronic Arts’ quarterly earnings call, the company has announced that it has acquired Metalhead Software.

The Canadian company is the primary developer of the six-year-old Super Mega Baseball franchise.

The acquisition marks a return to baseball for one of the most prolific sports video game publishers in the industry.

Electronic Arts has not released a baseball game in the U.S. since MVP Baseball 2005.

In the news release announcing the acquisition, EA SPORTS EVP and GM Cam Weber said the team has long admired Metalhead.

“We look forward to supporting and investing in the team so they can continue to build out more amazing games that delight sports fans around the world,” he said. “EA SPORTS contines to expand and we’re deeply excited to create more unique and interactive experiences that blur the lines between sports and entertainment.”

The baseball news comes shortly after the company announced new college football, golf and F1 racing interests and weeks after San Diego Sports and Sony Interactive Entertainment released MLB The Show ’21 on all platforms.

Terms of the EA/Metalhead deal were not disclosed.
